In the years immediately preceding World War I, geophysical observers from DTM traversed Australia making geomagnetic measurements. The effort was part of the Department's World Magnetic Survey and was undertaken in cooperation with Australian astronomers and geologists. In 2005, Australian geophysicist Doug Morrison chronicled the hardships and accomplishments of these pioneering field expeditions in a series of three articles published in Preview, the magazine of the Australian Society of Exploration Geophysicists (ASEG).
The articles are presented here with permission from Mr. Morrison and from ASEG, which holds copyright. They originally appeared in Preview issue no. 115, April 2005; no. 116, June 2005; and no. 117, August 2005.
