| David Greenewalt Building Dedication | | Thursday, 7 September 2006 The Department of Terrestrial Magnetism (DTM) and the Geophysical Laboratory (GL) held a dedication ceremony on Thursday, 7 September 2006, for the David Greenewalt Building. The building, located on the Broad Branch Campus, is the result of a renovation and expansion of DTM's Experiment Building, originally constructed in 1919. The building is named in memory of David Greenewalt, the geophysicist and oceanographer who served as a trustee of the Carnegie Institution from 1992 through 2003. The decision to honor him was made in recognition of his life-long devotion to scientific discovery and his service to Carnegie as a member of its Board of Trustees. The new facility houses the Merle Tuve Room, a state-of-the-art lecture hall, a conference room, a basement carpentry shop, and a basement laboratory as well as a courtyard area. The Merle Tuve Room is named for long-time staff member and director Merle A. Tuve. This room is the building's dining hall and will be the new home of the Broad Branch Campus Lunch Club, which was initiated under Tuve's directorship at DTM in 1948. The lecture hall will be the new location of the weekly seminar series of the two departments as well as other special events. It has a seating capacity of 118. The conference room will host smaller meetings of up to 15. See photos of the day's events and prior renovation and completion:
