6-8 apples, depending on size (read here about what kind of apples to use)
1/2 + 1/2 cup sugar (or brown sugar or combination)
1/4 tsp. ground cloves
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
2-4 tsp. lemon juice
1/4 + 1/2 cup flour
1/2 cup rolled oats
1/8 tsp. salt
1 stick butter, melted
1/2 cups ground walnuts
1/4 cup cranberries (optional)
Pare apples and cut into slices. Add cranberries (optional), 1/2 cup sugar, spices, lemon and 1/4c flour. Mix and put into buttered pyrex (8x8 inch square). Prepare the topping by combining the remaining sugar (1/2 cup), flour (1/2 cup), oats, salt, butter and nuts. Mixture will be crumbly. Sprinkle over apple mixture.
Bake at 350F, until top is golden brown and juices are bubbling, about 45 mins. Serve plain or with vanilla ice-cream.
