MESSENGER Postdoctoral Fellow Christian Klimczak explores ghost craters on Mercury in his most recent published paper, "Deformation associated with ghost craters and basins in volcanic smooth plains on Mercury: Strain analysis and implications for plains evolution." The paper reports several types of ghost craters in volcanic plains on Mercury. Analysis of deformation associated with these ghost craters then provides insight into their formation and smooth plains emplacement.
