Friday, 3 December 2004, the DTM Dynamos, at long last, regained their former sporting glory as they won a victory against the GL Pistons in this year’s Fall Mud Cup. After the first scheduled game was cancelled due to weather, spirits on campus were running a bit low and there were questions as to whether or not there would actually be a Fall Mud Cup. However, after some wrangling over dates and times, the teams managed to come together on what turned out to be a beautiful afternoon, despite strong winds from the northwest. DTM employed a strong defense throughout the game in a bid to hold off GL’s usual offensive onslaught and in the climactic moment in the middle of the first half, Brian Savage, a postdoctoral fellow with the seismology group, executed an Earth-shattering corner that quickly found its way into the goal—the only goal scored during the game.
Despite being granted a penalty kick by the referee in the second half the Pistons did not manage to score, and so the game ended with a 1-0 victory for DTM—the first win for the team since 3 August 2000. Captained brilliantly by Henner Busemann, the Dynamos played with finesse and determination. As Henner said, it was a case of "brains over muscle."
In a low-key ceremony on Monday, 6 December, Wes Huntress, director of the Geophysical Laboratory, returned the slightly dusty cup to its proper place, upon the desk of DTM’s director, Sean Solomon.
