This year's group of summer interns, having arrived in May, are just finishing their projects for the summer. Aditi Bhaskar of Brown University is working with Paul Silver and Brian Savage to analyze data from two DTM instrument deployments on the Tibetan Plateau and the Yunnan Province, China, to identify variations in crustal and mantle structure along the plateau boundary. Amanda Hughes of Washington and Lee University is studying the mechanisms of intermediate-and deep-focus earthquakes with Linda Warren. Hughes is analyzing the directivity of earthquakes in the Tonga subduction zone to test the hypothesis that such earthquakes occur on reactivated faults.
Jennifer Ortega of the University of Missouri is working with Sara Seager on developing models of the Archean Earth as an analogue to an extrasolar planet. Erica Staehling of Bucknell Univeristy, together with James Cho, is studying magnetohydrodynamic shallow-water turbulence on a rotating sphere and its astrophysical applications. In addition, former intern Sonali Shukla of NYU has returned to continue her work with Sara Seager, developing models for Earth during the last glacial maximum and snowall Earth as analogues to extrasolar planets.
