November 6 - Visiting Investigator Kevin Burke received the Structural Geology and Tectonics Division Career Contribution Award during the Presidential Address and Award Ceremony of the Geological Society of America's annual meeting in Denver, Colorado.

October 12 - Sean Solomon was awarded the Public Service Medal of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration "for exceptional leadership in the development of NASA's Solid Earth Science Program."

July 1 - David James has been appointed Honorary Professor in the School of Geosciences, University of Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa.

May 19 - David James has been elected a Fellow of the American Geophysical Union and will be honored at a ceremony during the AGU Spring Meeting in Montreal.

April 19 - Vera Rubin was awarded the James Craig Watson medal and prize from the National Academy of Sciences "for her seminal observations of dark matter in galaxies, large-scale relative motions of galaxies, and for generous mentoring of young astronomers, men and women."

April 17 -Paul Butler was presented with the University of Maryland's 2004 International Alumnus Award at the Fifth Annual Alumni Association Award Gala.

March 18 - Sara Seager was awarded the Harvard Astronomy Bok Prize, given biannually to a Ph.D. graduate of the Harvard Astronomy Department.

March 3 - Vera Rubin was one of five recipients of the Wings Trust's Woman of Discovery Awards, presented at The National Arts Club.

February 4 - Director Emeritus George Wetherill was awarded the Henry Russell Lectureship from the American Astronomical Society.
