William McDonough of the University of Maryland delivered this week’s DTM seminar: “Accretion of Moderately Volatile Elements.” McDonough’s research focuses primarily on the composition, structure, and evolution of the Earth and the other terrestrial planets. In his talk, McDonough described trends of volatile element fractionation in the both rocky objects of the Solar System through the examination of Mg/Si/Al, alkali metals, and other element groups. McDonough explained that the degree of fractionation and the systematic nature of this fractionation in the Solar System are poorly known. In addition, McDonough explained modeling techniques he has developed to aid in understanding the composition of the Earth.
