Members of the science team for the MESSENGER mission to Mercury met at DTM last week to discuss the spacecraft’s recent Venus 2 Flyby and the upcoming Mercury flybys in January and October 2008 and September 2009. Various discipline groups of the team met individually on 19 June, including the geology, geophysics, geochemistry, and atmosphere and magnetosphere groups. On 20 June, all participants met in the Greenewalt lecture hall to discuss the Venus 2 flyby performance, outcome, and various results, including the series of images captured by MESSENGER of Venus during the flyby. Hakan Svedhem, a project scientist for the European Space Agency’s Venus Express mission also spoke at the meeting on results from Venus Express during MESSENGER’s encounter with the planet.
