Alceste
Bonanos joined DTM in September as the Vera C. Rubin Fellow. She
completed her Ph.D. in astronomy in June at Harvard University. Her astrophysical interests include the extra-galactic distance scale,
variable stars, supernovae, and gamma-ray bursts. Her primary thesis
work involved utilizing observations of detached eclipsing binary stars
to refine distances to nearby galaxies. At DTM, Bonanos plans to
measure the characteristics of the most massive stars in nearby
galaxies, applying her measurements to theories on the formation and
evolution of large stars as functions of metallicity.
