NSF Postdoctoral Associate Dayanthie Weeraratne departed DTM last week for a faculty position at California State University, Northridge, starting in September. Weeraratne worked on several projects during her time at DTM, including a surface wave tomography study of lithospheric rifting in the Ethiopian plateau and an investigation with Paul Silver on surface wave anisotropy and regional S wave anisotropy in Tibet, the findings from which suggest that the crust and mantle in this region may deform coherently. With Peter Olson at The Johns Hopkins University, Weeraratne also conducted simulations of the process of core formation with laboratory experiments involving mixtures of corn syrup and liquid gallium.
