A “Top Ten” View of Earth Photographed by MESSENGER Print E-mail
Monday, 27 August 2007

A photo of Earth, taken by the MESSENGER spacecraft during its 2 August 2005 Earth flyby, has been named one of “The Top 10 Views of Earth from Space”—number five to be exact—by Space.com. During this particular flyby, MESSENGER adjusted its path to Mercury and the spacecraft team tested various pieces of onboard equipment, snapping some shots of Earth. According to the article, the camera used was designed to characterize minerals that may have formed in Mercury’s crust. It took the three-band composite image on the right using multiple wavelength imaging—giving the continental areas their red color—a result of the high reflectance of vegetation in the near-infared part of the spectrum.
