Vera Rubin
was one of the astronomers featured on Alan Alda’s latest television series, "The Dark Side of the Universe," which aired nationally June 22 on PBS. The second segment in this three-part series explored the topic of dark matter, a subject to which Rubin has devoted much of her work. Dark matter is hypothesized to be the unseen matter in the universe which was essential to the formation of galaxies after the Big Bang. Evidence of this matter is being detected both by astronomers and physicists in a race to answer some of the leading questions about how our universe came into being.
