Sergei Ipatov

Sergei Ipatov's research interests are related to modeling and interpreting physical processes, mainly the processes of the formation and evolution of the solar system. He made computer simulations of the orbital evolution of celestial bodies and dust particles in the solar system and of the accumulation of planetary objects. Based on the computer simulation results, Dr. Sergei Ipatov studied different problems of the migration of celestial bodies (i.e., asteroids, comets, trans-Neptunian objects, planetesimals, planet embryos) and dust particles in the forming and present Solar System, the accumulation of planets, the formation of the Kirkwood gaps, the asteroid and comet hazard to the Earth, the distribution of interplanetary dust originated in different parts of the Solar System, etc. Results of the computer simulations were compared with observations. Ipatov also conducted observations of asteroids and lectured on the migration of celestial bodies. Besides astronomy, he has an experience in mathematical modeling of other physical processes such as modeling the generation of acoustic waves in porous media and the channel routing for two-layer chips. Ipatov was a member of the Deep Impact team and analyzed the images made by this spacecraft. During his work at Department of Terrestrial Magnetism of Carnegie Institutions of Washington, together with Alan Boss he applied the FLASH adaptive mesh refinement code to study the dynamics of mixing and transport processes in the presolar cloud and in the solar nebular. Since July 2007 together with James Cho, Ipatov has studied the radiative transfer in atmospheres of test extrasolar planets. Since April 2008 Ipatov works at Catholic University of America as a PI of the NASA DDAP grant ''Velocities and amount of material ejected at different times after the Deep Impact collision''.
