Tuesday, 17 February 2009 11:06

Alan Boss

Update, 25 February 2009: Alan Boss is featured in exoplanet article on CNN.com

Alan Boss spoke at a symposium entitled The Origin and Evolution of Planets that highlighted recent and future research on extrasolar planets and the possible presence of life at the 2009 American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) annual meeting last week in Chicago. Boss, author the new book The Crowded Universe: The Search for Living Planets, pointed out that evidence for ice giants, gas giants, and terrestrial planets has been detected in extra-solar systems. He comments in the CIW press release, We already know enough now to say that the Universe is probably loaded with terrestrial planets similar to Earth. We should expect that there are going to be many planets which are habitable, so probably some are going to be inhabited as well."

Boss' AAAS talk was also mentioned sarcastically on MSNBC's Rachel Maddow Show, in which Kent Jones, Pop Culturist, says, "Next, speaking in a big science meeting this week, Dr. Alan Boss says there could be 100 billion earth-like planets in our galaxy. Dr. Boss says many of these planets could contain primitive bacterial life forms that, unfortunately, think that tax cuts will solve their economic problems. There's a lot of evolving still to be done out there, people." Click here for the full show transcript.
