Larry Nittler has been elected a Fellow of the Meteoritical Society and was honored at the society’s 73rd annual meeting last night. Fellows of the society “have distinguished themselves in meteoritics or allied sciences. Presently, 1% of the membership may be elected as new Fellows by the Council each even-numbered year.” Other Meteoritical Society Fellows at DTM include Conel Alexander, elected in 2008, and Alan Boss, elected in 2002. Former DTM director George Wetherill was also elected as a Fellow in 1968.

The Meteoritical Society is a non-profit scholarly organization founded in 1933 to promote the study of extraterrestrial materials, including meteorites and returned samples, and their history. The membership of the society includes 950 scientists and amateur enthusiasts from over 33 countries who are interested in a wide range of planetary science. Members' interests include meteorites, cosmic dust, asteroids and comets, natural satellites, planets, impacts, and the origins of the Solar System.
