Vera Rubin is the subject of an award-winning Minnesota Historical Society History Day project created by seventh grader Sophie Lopez. History Day is a co-curricular program that encourages young people to explore a historical subject related to an annual theme through “imaginative exhibits, original performances, informative documentaries, and historical research papers.”

Lopez's initial idea for her project, entitled “Seeing the Unseen: Vera Rubin and the Search for Dark Matter,” came after she first learned about Rubin at STEPS (Science Technology and Engineering Preview Summer Camp for Girls) in 2008 at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul. Lopez went on to research Rubin at several public and university libraries, received coaching from Minnesota History Day staff, and corresponded via email with Rubin. Lopez advanced from her school’s History Day fair to the Regional competition at St. Paul College. She will compete in the State Finals at the University of Minnesota on 2 May.
