DTM Gets New Mass Spectrometer for Geochemistry Group
Sunday, 29 February 2004 19:00

DTM's Geochemistry group has taken delivery of a new mass spectrometer, the Thermo Electron Corporation's Finnigan TRITON. This new machine, with its increased measuring capabilities, will allow the group to achieve greater precision in much of their work. Given its ability to measure both positive and negative ions as well as the inclusion of 5 electron multipliers, the new mass spectrometer will greatly improve the accuracy of geochemists' work in the field of isotopic ratios, a particular strength of the group and a field which allows scientists to detect important information about the evolution of the Earth's crust and mantle. In addition, the new machine will offer measurements of isotopic imprints left by short-lived radiometric systems in the single parts per million range, giving the scientists a far more precise view of events in our early solar system and continuing the Geochemistry groupâs strong tradition of work with and development of instrumentation that continues to open doors to new scientific opportunities.
