Steve Richardson, Associate Professor of Geochemistry at the University of Cape Town, has arrived for another sabbatical at DTM to collaborate with Steve Shirey and Rick Carlson on aspects of diamond genesis and craton evolution. Inclusions in diamonds are the ultimate time capsules from continental roots. Richardson will be exploring the Re-Os and U-Pb isotope systems in sulfide inclusions from the classic Premier kimberlite, Kaapvaal craton, southern Africa, which has produced the world's largest gem diamonds, including the Cullinan and Centenary stones. His most recent work on the antiquity of harzburgitic diamonds stored in the Kaapvaal craton mantle keel for up to 3.5 billion years was reported at the Goldschmidt 2006 Conference, Melbourne, Australia.
