The Carnegie Institution of Washington’s Legacy Project has unveiled a new online exhibit, designed by DTM’s Oksana Skass, which highlights the life and work of James Percy Ault (1881-1929), one of the scientists working on the Carnegie research vessel who served as captain on many of the ship’s voyages. Ault, a geophysicist by training, sailed with both the Carnegie and the Galilee research vessels during his tenure with DTM, undertaking magnetic research in such locales as Mexico, Bolivia, Peru, Europe, and Antarctica. The Legacy Project, funded by a generous grant from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC), began in 2003 and is charged with the mission “to preserve, organize, and make accessible to the public the institution's historic records.” The Carnegie archives hold an extensive collection of Captain Ault’s papers, including over 2000 letters as well as numerous journals and photographs.
