Ernst Zinner, Research Professor of Physics and Earth and Planetary Sciences at Washington University, St. Louis, joined DTM this week for a month-long visit as a Merle A. Tuve Fellow. Zinner, an expert on the ion microprobe and its use for the study of presolar grains and other problems in astrophysics and cosmochemistry, was a mentor to both Conel Alexander and Larry Nittler, during their time at Washington University as a postdoctoral fellow and a Ph.D. student, respectively. Zinner will present a Tuve Lecture on his research entitled, "Stardust in the Laboratory: Where do we Stand?" on 14 April. For more information, see his Web site.
Merle A. Tuve served as DTM director from 1946-1966. Among his many scientific accomplishments, he supervised the design of a pressurized Van de Graaff generator, which achieved energies above 4 MeV. He also began construction of a 60-inch cyclotron designed to produce large quantities of radioactive isotopes.
