Linda Elkins-Tanton, Mitsui Career Development Associate Professor of Geology at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, will become the seventh director of the Department of Terrestrial Magnetism.  Elkins-Tanton will succeed Sean Solomon, director since 1992, who will remain a member of DTM's Research Staff.  Elkins-Tanton will begin her directorship in September.  She brings scientific interests that include magma oceans and early atmospheres on the terrestrial planets and rocky exoplanets, the interplay between lithospheric dynamics and continental magmatism, and flood basalt volcanism and its possible links to environmental changes and global extinction events.  For more information see Carnegie Institution's Press Release.
