HLP Workshop Details Announced

The first official workshop of the HLP project will be held in Bend, Oregon from July 19-21. The Workshop will consist of pre- and post-conference field trips to examine the differences between Cascade volcanism and that expressed in the western-most HLP volcano, Newberry Volcano. Expected attendance will be on the order of 40 scientists and students interested in the causes of volcanism and tectonism in the High Lava Plains. The workshop program can be found on the "Upcoming Events" pages.

Miami U Students involved in HLP Project

Ninad Bondre, Ph.D. student. One portion of Ninad's Ph.D. research is focused on the tectonomagmatic development of the Jordan Valley Volcanic Field of southeastern Oregon. This volcanic field lies at the northern edge of the Owyhee Plateau and encompasses a number of monogenetic basalt vents ranging from approximately 5 Ma to 10 ka in age. The products of these magmatic systems are chemically and isotopically heterogeneous and range from olivine tholeiites to mildly ne-normative alkaline basalts, including relatively primitive compositions.

Update #9 - April 2006

Scarberry and Grunder have received EdMap funds from the USGS to complement the CD work. We will be producting maps for the area of Beatty's Butte and northern Abert Lake.

Update #8 - April 2006

Students that are engaged in the project as OSU include PhD student Kaleb Scarberry and undergraduate students Tom Wagner, who is interested in gravity surveying to be done across Abert and other basins, and Mike Iademarco, completing a senior thesis on Hampton Butte.

Update #7 - April 2006

A paper on aspects of High Lava Plains rhyolites is virtually in press (awaiting acceptance of the revisions). It will be in the Snake River Plain rhyolites volume of JVGR. Please see the publications page for a preprint.
